permitting in a new state

    Hello all,
I am currently in the process of trying to get a kelp farm permitted in NJ. The Dept of Agriculture is supportive of the idea, yet we have been met with complex permits from governing agencies dealing with Tidelands and the Coastal Zone Management rules, then compliance with USACE. Tidelands said it would be a high bar. Planning on going forward meeting with the agencies prior to filing applications and hiring an environmental consultant well versed in NJ aquaculture to aid in the process. Before filing, we are also still in search of a site, I have been looking on ArcGIS and some local fishermen have been helping us scope out potential areas (they have been very supportive in our exploration). I have compiled some academic papers, farm design plans, and made a few presentations for gov agencies so far, yet need a physical location to continue on. If there are any resources available anyone is willing to share, or has insight on what it takes to help get kelp permitted in their state. My team and I would be very appreciative, long road ahead!
    Best,
    Emily

@emily_dalgauer5220 It sounds like you've done a ton of work already! Have you checked out the resources in the courses on the Hub? If you go to the Farming Courses & filter by "Getting Started" you'll see all the courses that relate to permitting and getting an application in order. There's a specific one on site selection as well. Within those courses are a bunch of resources as well like financial plans, farm diagrams, and even a permit application example (CT).
If there's something specific you're looking for that you can't find let us know! If we don't have the resource maybe someone in the community can chime in.

@emily_dalgauer5220 Hey Emily! This is great stuff. My brother and I are also Interested in starting a kelp farm in NJ. We've been passively researching as we're also in the early stages of navigating permits and identifying potential sites. In terms of assistance I'm sure there's nothing I know that you don't, but I do have the technical ability to research sites and cut through red tape. I'd be interested in collaborating with you and your team to help streamline the start-up process for future farms. Feel free to PM me!
