Stony Brook Seaweed Fertilizer Research Webinar - Nov 19th

The New York State Dept of Environmental Conservation and NEIWPCC will be hosting a virtual webinar on Thursday, November 19th 2:00PM-3:30PM to share seaweed fertilizer research completed by Stony Brook's Gobler Lab. Project entitled: Assessment of Heavy Metal Accumulation in Kelp and Other Seaweeds and Fruit-Bearing Plants and Vegetables Treated with Seaweed Fertilizers. 
The research project:

• Grew kelp in Long Island Sound (East River, Northport Harbor) and Long Island south shore (Moriches Bay); and collected wild seaweeds (Ulva, Gracilaria) from Long Island south shore (Shinnecock Bay)
• Tested seaweeds above for heavy metals
• Processed seaweeds into dry and liquid fertilizers, and compared to commercial chemical synthetic fertilizer on 3 crops: carrots, spinach, tomatoes
• Compared crop results for: harvest yields, heavy metal content compared to food safety standards, nutritional value compared to recommended daily values
