"The economic case becomes more significant as pressure on conventional resources intensifies. Agriculture accounts for approximately 72 percent of global freshwater withdrawals, according to recent FAO data compiled by UN-Water, while global agricultural use of inorganic fertilizer reached 197 million tonnes of nutrients in 2024. At the same time, the International Energy Agency has warned that petrochemical feedstocks are becoming an increasingly important source of oil demand, with polymers and synthetic fibers alone projected to require 18.4 million barrels per day of oil by 2030."
