getting started
-
Hello all,
Looking to get started in this industry. I am former military, and currently a government contractor. Trying to figure out where my next step in life is and I'm heavily leaning towards kelp farming. I live in Utah, but plan on moving back east within a year.
I am going through the videos here and was wondering if people would be willing to share their farms personal logistics such as number of staff etc. Looking forward to getting to know more of you and thank you for your time.
@brandon_20241122161809520 Hi Brandon, Welcome! Every farm is different, but I would say that predominately the farms that I'm familiar with tend to be family run operations with 1-2 owner/operators and 1-2 seasonal crew who assist for several days or weeks during high activity periods in the fall and spring such as gear deployment and outplanting and harvest. Some farmers work together to trade off labor on each others' farms too, which can be a great way to build connection with regional farms and keep costs down. Hope that helps!
@brandon_20241122161809520 do you know where back east you are going to move to yet? Asking for a friend?
@butch_dawbin4764 sorry for the late reply. Looking like South Carolina.
@brandon_20241122161809520 Recommend checking out some of the old farmer forum videos in Events. There have been a lot of farmers who come on and talk about farm logistics.
