Biodiversity and Shellfish/Kelp Farming

    Hi!
I am a shellfish and kelp farmer in British Columbia Canada. In our jurisdiction, our industry really struggles with some bad social capital relationships due to lost gear and irresponsible farm management in the past. We have made a concerted effort to clean up our industry behaviour with new farm gear traceability policies, seafloor clean ups, removal of exposed styrofoam, etc. Our local industry association is looking to do a bit of positive story telling in the future, talking about how farms support ocean health and improved biodiversity. I was wondering if any other jurisdictions have had experience or success with these kind of campaigns, what worked, what didn't, what resources you used for information, etc. Any information would be kelpful!

    Cheers, Bretton

@bretton_hills Hi Bretton, I’m south of you in Washington state and am not quite a farmer (have all my permits but the approval was appealed so we had to go to “court” and are awaiting that decision). We’re planning on putting gear in the water this fall provided things go our way. Social license is a topic I’m very interested in and I’d love to chat with you. Feel free to reach out if there is interest. Our website has more info about us as well as details of the appeal process
