Uptake of Heavy Metals?

Heavy metal uptake in seaweeds is a major concern for customers I have spoken to in food/nutraceuticals. I wanted to know if anyone here has best practices for water quality testing and testing seaweed - which metals, what levels are permissible, and how to test. Looking mainly at red/green species like Ulva, Gracilaria, Caulerpa, Kappaphycus. Thanks!

@arnav_mariwala thanks for the question. Although I don't have specific insights into the species you're asking about, I can share some information about cold water kelp species. Permissible heavy metal levels will vary based on location and end-use, so I recommend looking up specific regulations in your area. GreenWave compiled a list of tests you may wish to run on your seaweed. This is a starting place, but again it will vary by market and location. I'd also recommend looking at the edible seaweed regulatory framework in Europe to give you an idea of permissible levels there. Here's information about maximum contaminant levels in Australia as well. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions!

@grace_collery thanks for sharing! I was wondering if you had insight on heavy metal uptake by different species as well, which would inform optimum levels in growing locations.

@arnav_mariwala Unfortunately I don't believe that level of detail is available at this time -- though if anyone on here knows otherwise, please reply to set the record straight!
