New England Kelp Harvest Week 2023

Below is a message sent this week from The Sugar Kelp Cooperative to sugar kelp supporters - mostly in New England, New York regarding our restaurant-based sugar kelp harvest celebration. Posting this here because A) We want you to join us at the restaurants and the events, and B) because we will be recruiting more New England kelp farms to join 'the kelp coop'.

Hello friends!
We, your local kelp farmers, are back for our third year of the restaurant-based celebration of our first local crop of the year – sugar kelp.
Like last year, this runs from 4/20 to 5/1.
A couple reasons we chose this timeframe:- Our harvest time is early April to late May…so this falls in the middle.
- 4/22 is Earth Day which creates a great opportunity to highlight the benefits of our zero-input, regenerative farms.
- Someone said “Weed Day to May Day” and we said “You bet it is!”
NEKH23 - Kelp Week will include truly innovative and dazzling, as well as very simple yet amazing, meals, drinks, appetizers, desserts, etc at many of the best restaurants in our region. Additionally, we and our friends are holding parties at breweries & restaurants, educational events in schools where our children learn about kelp and how to cook with kelp (kelp and Earth Day education is a perfect combination), formal (but so so fun) kelp cooking classes, farm tours, and a bunch of other very cool & fun stuff (and dare we say, meaningful stuff.) Check out the “2023 Programming” page on our web site. Note: This list is growing so be sure to check back when kelp week is here.
A few additional notes:- Participating restaurants, breweries, stores will be listed on our website starting 4/17. For reference, the web site lists our business partners from last year’s kelp week. Please take a look at this list and let us know if there of any restaurants not included that you feel would like to join – and we’ll reach out to them.
- We are supporting World Central Kitchen this year. The #wck with their transformational works like #ChefsForUkraine #ChefsForAmerica #ChefsForAfghanistan are inspirational to us. (Take a deep dive into their work – truly miraculous.)
- For visiting our restaurant partners and sending-out feedback via Instagram – which is great for us - we’ll be giving away gift cards, kelp swag, etc.
We are so excited to be able to bring sugar kelp to our communities. And we are so excited to taste and experience the creations of our amazing chefs.
