Hi Seaweed Lovers, Happy New Year,
I am currently in the UK but moving to New Zealand next month and hoping to start working in the aquaculture industry asap with the aim of setting up a seaweed farm. Anyone in NZ at the moment that has on the ground know how or interest in the seaweed/aquaculture industry there? I'm looking at working on a mussel farm for a year to gain experience, save up for a boat and do further research. I have a close friend in the UK that is working on some exciting seaweed projects such as drying machines and alternative plastics.
Looking forward to the course starting today, hoping to learn a lot, albeit a US based program.
    Cheers,
    Colin

@colin_wadeson Welcome, Colin! I love that your plan is to work on a mussel farm for a year - I think getting that hands-on experience in shellfish farming is one of the best ways to break into the industry.
You might check out some of the contacts in this older discussion thread for other Kiwis working in the space. I know there's a lot of burgeoning interest and projects at the moment!

Colin, I don’t have strong kiwi farm connects but might you connect me with your friend that is working on drying tech in the UK? 👀☺

@tiffany_stephens85 Hi Tiffany, Can you email me with your questions and/or how you are currently positioned in the industry and I will forward it on. That way he has your email address and can reply as he sees fit.
He is an investor in a start up and as I understand it, they are close to finishing a prototype dryer that is semi-portable for accessing farms directly. I think they will be ultimately looking at some pretty big players to sell to or hire equipment to as part of post harvest processing of seaweed. Is this a service that you need? Or are you doing similar research into engineering solutions for drying seaweed?
    My email is cjwadeson@gmail.com
Look forward to hearing from you soon,
    Kind regards,
    Colin
