Vegetative gametophyte culture tips
-
Hey, we have been running our hatchery in Wales, UK for 2 years now and would like to start learning to keep Gametophyte cultures for longer by growing them vegetative under red light.
Has any one here got any experience with this? Our starting point is based on the New England Culture Handbook section on Gametophyte cultures, but maybe some one has come across any other useful literature that could guide us.
All the best. Diolch yn fawr!
@christian_berger I find "Protocols for Macroalgae Research" to be very useful for understanding how to start gametophyte cultures (chapt 2 & 3, attached)
@charles_yarish @david_bailey @michael_martyrivera @margaret_aydlett --- Do you have any other go-to references for gametophyte culturing?

@ashley_hamilton Thanks Ashley - this is really useful and goes into a lot more detail. Much appreciated!

@christian_berger our gametophyte bioreactors keep them growing under red light vegetatively. You can continue to shred or stir them as needed without removing them from the bioreactor. You can change the light frequency if you'd like to induce them. More info here: https://industrialplankton.com/photobioreactor/seaweed-bioreactor-system/
