Ready to experiment
-
Hello! Found someone in my community with a boat and an interesting in experimenting growing kelp in Jamaica bay! I realize kelp isn’t legal yet to grow here for food consumption but assuming we can give it a try and see what happens.
Now we need to get our hands on some spores! Can anyone help connect me to how to do this? Thank you so much I am excited!!!
@danielle_schwab you will need to contact the DEC for permitting, your local representatives are Wade Carden and Jennifer O’Dwyer (they’re the same for me on Long Island). Once your permits (technically/legally I think it’s an amendment to a shellfish permit) are in order we sell seed string commercially, or you could contact greenwave or another source. Good luck, we need more kelp farmers in our area to clean up the bays!
@elizabeth_savage19 Hi Elizabeth! Thank you so much for passing along Jennifer's name. I reached out to her and they happened to be finishing a new permit which I am hoping to submit soon. Thanks again
@danielle_schwab Nice to see you are making some progress. The GreenWave hatchery sells seed to farmers/entities with permitted research or commercial sites. We need proof of permit/permission to grow the seed that we produce in order to make the transaction. In general, our team finalizes orders for seedstring by mid-to-late summer. @michelle_stephens can share some more details about the process and how to get on the list to access seed in the future.
Hi @danielle_schwab !
I am including this year's pricing sheet for you to reference. Currently I am accepting spool requests for our 2022 waiting list.
We will post here on the community and social media in August to announce we are accepting spool orders for the 2023/2024 farming season.
Our pricing structure requires a spool deposit to hold seed for a farmer in our hatchery, then a full payment for spools after the farmer has received them.

@michelle_stephens Hi michelle! Thanks so much for passing this along. I would like to be added to the waiting list!!
@danielle_schwab
Wonderful! Please send me an email (michelle@greenwave.org) with how many spools you'd be interested in.

@danielle_schwab Just curious how the permitting process has gone and if you have been successful in getting seed in the bay! Look forward to an update when ya get the chance.
