Hatchery Beta Project here in Rhode Island.

Hello we are running some kelp strings in a hatchery here in Rhode Island. I am interested in helping Kelp farms in the area get some seed. When I say we that is a hatchery owner, a biological expert, and my self. The local farms are looking for seed and many missed the window offered here. Today I would love to hear about a source for string....Any idea of a store to buy 2mm string?

@michelle_stephens do you have any recommendations for local seed string suppliers? I know Holdfast has been running low on supply...
@charles_westcott the Holdfast product that GreenWave has sourced in the past is a 1mm nylon turfing twine. We have also worked with a cotton seedstring from Korea that is made specifically for seaweed culture (that is difficult to come by); and a 2mm Cremona seedstring sourced from Japan--which has more surface area but is stiffer than the other seedstring we have worked with.
My first suggestion is to find something that is comparable to the tufting twine; and follow suggestions for seedstring prep described in the Hatchery Curriculum . If you are interested in the Japanese Cremona, let me or Michelle know and we will share more about the process for connecting with the supplier, etc. It may be too late in the season to get string from that source, however, as shipping can take several weeks.

@charles_westcott Tagging @elizabeth_savage19 here as they also had some questions around sourcing string. If you find any sources could you share? Thanks!

@jwhis thank you! We were able to get our supply from Holdfast finally, but I was able to find untreated/raw tufting twine from A1 Foam & Fabric that I’m going to try, as well as raw 2mm nylon Mason twine from Grainger for experiments.
