Nutrients in the hatchery
-
At GreenWave, we've done side by side trials of a pre-mixed F/2 (Part A & B) and laboratory prepared Provasoli-Enriched Seawater (PES). We have found no significant differences in spool quality or the number of days until outplanting. Due to its ease of use and affordability, we now solely operate with F/2.
What is everyone else using for nutrients in their hatcheries?
If you're leaning towards preparing PES -- check out our PES calculator. This tool can guide you through the chemical ordering list, deciding how much volume you'll need to prepare, and the recipe to follow to make that volume.

I'm just wondering what exactly is meant by "PES additions at half-strength (10ml/L)". Is the amount of nutrients the same throughout the hatchery process or does it change?
Thank you for sharing this, it is a very helpful resource.

Hi Rachel, thanks for the question!
When using PES for other types of (non kelp) cultures, it is typically recommended to add at 20mL / L. However, researchers have found that half strength (10mL / L) is best for kelp growth.
You do add the same amount of PES for the whole season (10mL / L) -- the "half strength" label just indicates that it's half the concentration of other PES uses.
I hope this clears it up! Please let me know if you have other nutrient questions
