Jambo! (Greetings) from Kenya, East Africa
-
My name is Oscar, from the Kenyan Coast. I value-add seaweed on small scale, looking to facilitate cultivation of seaweed, on the North Coast, where there has been none before.
I invite training opportunities that will enhance my competence and confidence. Training, Volunteer, internship, or any arrangement is welcome. I'm ready and willing to travel to any part of the world.
Thank you
@oscar_ikinya - Hi Oscar, welcome! As you've probably noticed, the material on the Hub is focused on growing cold water species of kelp, so I can't offer any specific advice for cultivating warm water species. However, there is a growing contingent of folks in the community who are interested in the same topics! There's a conversation in the community here where folks have discussed other resources including a Tropical Seaweed Cultivation manual by Erick Ask. I'd also ask if you are aware of the work of Dr. Flower Msuya in Tanzania (specifically Zanzibar?) nearby? She's done impressive work to bring the industry to the area, and might be a good start for looking at more regional options.
@lindsay_olsen - Thank you for your kind and detailed reply. It always makes me proud how my trainer Dr Flower Msuya is recognized and respected in the hallways of Seaweed. I'm actually looking for funding to attend her ZaSCI Seaweed festival on 23rd July 2022 in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
I believe that cultivation and value addition of Seaweed in the East African region, can benefit from collaboration and share of information from the world over, including your cold water operations. I feel it will be a valuable opportunity to experience anything and everything seaweed. If the opportunity can be created, please do invite me
