Greetings future farmers! A friend and I are working on the due diligence necessary to start a farm in Western Washington. If there's anyone around the state who'd like to connect let me know! I am looking forward to being in this community.
@jorgen_nicholls - Welcome! It might be of interest to check out this community thread from @mike_spranger who recently went through the permitting process for Vashon Island in Washington State. It seems there is a lot of interest in the region - just a matter of tackling a rather complex permitting process.
@jorgen_nicholls - If you have not already, you may also want to connect with Meg Chadsey at Washington Sea Grant. She is leading the "Production Work Group" through the Sea Grant Seaweed Hub initiative. WA Sea Grant also led a state-specific seaweed farmer training workshop series back in 2019/2020. You can find the presentations (and list of local experts) here.
@jorgen_nicholls Hello Jorgen. I've recently moved to Quilcene, WA from Minnesota where I was farming. I've been looking into ways I can get into farming now out here in WA and have just learned about ocean farming from reading Bren Smith's book. I think its right up my alley for what I want to get into. I'm happy to connect! I see from the replies you got above there's a some folks well down the path of getting a farm going. I'm gonna check those recommendations out too.
@andy_mattison I'm happy there's so much support in this state for these farms. A word of caution about Quilcene bay, the Skokomish tribe drove out a mussel farm that had been operating there for nearly 25 years. I wish you luck!

@jorgen_nicholls -hi. I’m building a farm south of you off Vashon Island. Feel free to reach out at mikeonvashon@yahoo.com

@jorgen_nicholls - Hey Jorgen, we're hoping to get something started in Northern Oregon. Skal!
@amberlee_mills I just emailed you, but I'm in Astoria and looking to get a farm started, I'd love to chat and/or check out what you've got going on.

@jorgen_nicholls Well Jorgen, that's rather disconcerting news... Any info on why they pushed them out?
@andy_mattison I'm not super sure, they weren't very forthcoming with information. https://www.southwhidbeyrecord.com/life/mussel-farm-forced-to-end-quilcene-operation/
