Oyster Farming Discussion and Personal Intro
-
Hello Green Wave Community!
My name is Jeremiah, I live in Canada on the west coast of BC. After watching some videos featuring Bren Smith and hearing about the Hub, I looked for a local ocean farming operation to become a part of. I had spent some time working on boats and ships - some of which serviced the local salmon farming industry. I wasn't keen on fin fish operations and having seen their activities - didn't see an opportunity for myself in the 'aquaculture' industry as it stands today. Shellfish farming being distinct from aquaculture only in vernacular; I prefer to refer to it as Ocean Farming. It really is a different kind of aquaculture as compared to fin fish. Near zero waste, high efficiency, no feed nor feces, etc..
I am working with a local Oyster producer as a 'farm hand', and I am excited about the future of Ocean Farming. I am looking at purchasing a Kelp lease and a hatchery. I have trouble seeing a market here on the coast, anyone have thoughts on this?
Looking to see what other shellfish producers are on the Hub and see what we can share.

Dear Jeremiah,
Would love to connect as I am about to move to BC to look into what could be set up in terms of IMTA. Am talking with the DFO on potential research project: oyster, seaweed, sea cucumber trial. Am involved with a UK based off shore shellfish farm that grows mussels.
Hope we can connect and collaborate.
Currently I am still in Japan but due to move to BC in summer.

Hi Sebastian, nice to meet you and thanks for reaching out. I have a friend that is named likewise - he does oyster farming on the coast too, long-time family operation.
My email address is jeremiahsand@pm.me - please contact me when you arrive.
Sea cukes, eh? I'm sure it could be lucrative. Have you considered mollusks, particularly Abalone?

@jeremiah_sand - Hi Jeremiah - Glad you joined the community. I'm assuming you've heard of Cascadia Seaweeds operating in BC? I believe they're working with different First Nations growers along the coast and might be an interesting contact / resource. Some other ocean farming/seaweed operations in B.C. that might be of interest: Canadian Pacifico Seaweeds, Sea Forest Macro Algae and Ondine Ocean Farm. Hope that helps!
Hello to everyone in this stream!!
Jeremiah, where in BC are you located? I’m in the same boat as you, in the very early stages of looking at oyster farming. Thinking of somewhere on the Sunshine Coast, just north of Vancouver. Would love to chat more!!!
Cheers, Mike.
