State of the Seaweed Industry - Snapshot of policy, investments, harvest data, and more
-
Check out Phyconomy's State of the Seaweed Industry report from earlier this year that covers policy, investments, harvest data, and more!
Highlights:- In 2021, seaweed investment deals doubled
- As market demand is no longer the big bottleneck it used to be and mechanized harvesting technology takes off, industry insiders expect the first mariculture harvests over 1000 tonnes to happen in the next years in Europe and North America.
- While traditional venture capital firms are starting to discover seaweed, impact investors are still overrepresented in the space.
- The number of new seaweed startups has grown by 50 percent in the past two years.
- The midstream of the value chain is still underserved: processing and distribution is a field that is lacking innovators and entrepreneurs. Processing the seaweeds is often done by the growers themselves for now.
@krizl_soriano -thanks for your work and posting the link here. I actually had started on something similar to and overlapping with this, but it doesn't have nice webpage-friendly interface yet, it's just a big Excel document with pages that list organizations (businesses, NPOs, gov. orgs) involved in different maritime industries (like aquaculture/mariculture) . Here is a pre-alpha copy for anyone interested. Note that to access the "code" from Github (in this case, there is just an Excel spreadsheet with no code that runs) you can click on the green dropdown "Code" button and then select "Download Zip".
Cheers
