Stonington Kelp Co - Hi, We are Suzie and Jay
-
My name is Suzie Flores and my husband Jay Douglas and I run Stonington Kelp Co in the fisher's island sound. We are preparing for our 5th harvest in 2022 and never stop learning how to be better. I am particularly excited about the farm hub because there is so much to know and no singular expert so this is a great way to get help fast on a wide variety of topics.
I am also a member of the sugar kelp cooperative which is a southern new england group that works to put on the New England Kelp Harvest week which encourages local restaurants to add kelp to the menus during the harvest season in southern new england (April / May)

@suzie_flores -YAY! Welcome! Remember that time we outplanted sugar kelp together for the first time! My how your farm has grown! We are so lucky to have intrepid ocean farmers like you and Jay right here in CT. I can't wait for New England Kelp Harvest Week!!!
What a beautiful spool! Nov 28, 2017.
@suzie_flores - Yay, Suzie! In addition to her amazing work with the Sugar Kelp Cooperative and organizing New England Kelp Harvest Week, Suzie is an expert in growing and running a small business and direct marketing her kelp. She kindly agreed to let me interview her for our farmer-focused newsletter Holdfast back in the day. Read more about her guidance on growing a brand presence and creating a customer base for your kelp here.
@suzie_flores -HI Suzie, can I come donate my time for a week some time when it would be helpful for you? Happy to do all the dirty, hard or boring stuff. I used to live down that way and would love to get my hands dirty and help if you’d take me?
@todd_azadian -Hi Todd, thanks so much for the offer! We have a lot of "dirty boring" stuff happening soon as we pull the farm and prepare the "spent kelp" to be a soil amendment. I will reach out as the season winds down!
@todd_azadian -Hi Todd, the season is wrapping up for us but perhaps in the autumn when we ramp back up again
