Santa Cruz & Seaweed
-
Hey there! Chris here, very grateful for this platform and ability to connect with you all. A bit about me:
I am PhD student at UC Santa Cruz in Environmental Studies and Critical Race & Ethnic Studies. I formerly worked as a marine biologist in shark conservation and science communication --> this work deepened my conviction that challenging/changing our business-as-usual consumption (and production upstream) is essential to moving through contemporary social and environmental crises.
I now study the relationship between consumer possibilities and community health, looking particularly at the racial impacts of plastic across its supply chain. I have had an interest in seaweed cultivation/consumption and circular, reusable, plant-based economies for quite some time now. If there's anyone in the Central Central Coast or Northern CA area, would love to connect or collab!
best,
Chris

Hi Chris!! I'll be in SC next fall as a new Ph.D. EEB student working on kelp culturing. I'd be great to connect and learn more about what you're doing/planning. Saludos!
@andrea_pazlacavex - that's rad, far out! Solid that you will be in Santa Cruz as well. I definitely want to hear more about your work as well when you arrive. Will you be working with Anne Kapuscinksi?
Let's connect then!! Anne's awesome, she's currently my MS Coastal Science and Policy program director.
Nice meeting you fellow kelp-er!

@christopher_lang -Hi Chris! I am a marine scientist, mariner, and former educator. After a decade of working in these fields, I went back to grad school at UW to study the human dimensions of coastal and marine resource use and management, with a focus on equity and social aspects of shoreline restoration and policy. I fell in love with kelp when I lived and worked on Catalina Island, back in 2009. I'm currently working a 9-5 as a coastal resource management practitioner, and am at the early stages of exploring possibilities for starting a kelp farm in central/northern CA.
Let's talk!
@cori_currier - Hi Cori! Sweet. Yeah I feel like we're in the best place ever to start a kelp farm. Would be cool to think through marine resource management and restoration and equity together. Definitely trying to center equity in the seaweed conversation as well. Let's talk for sure. This week is crazy for me, but next one is more mellow. Here's my email (calang@ucsc.edu). Thanks so much for reaching out!
best,
Chris
