Marine Fungi & Kelp Cultivation: Potential Opportunity for Research & Improvements?
-
I recently attended a talk (for general audiences)on fungi by the scientist Merlin Sheldrake (from the UK, but it sounds like he travels to places like Australia and Brazil for his research). While the talk was for general audiences, he did mention that there are marine fungi that live along-side and even within kelp and seagrass species. If I understood correctly, it sounded like there were often symbiotic relationships between them.
I am neither a biologist nor a kelp farmer, but I have read over the GreenWave kelp cultivation guides and to me, this was completely new information, so I thought I would share it with you all.
Maybe as the science of kelp cultivation continues to develop, these relationships will be better understood and nurseries might manage these fungal populations to better help the seaweed to grow.
Cheers
@steve_52 Thanks for sharing. I know Cornell University would love to explore more if there is a need to research more.
@alexsandra_bailey, thanks for the tip!

@steve_52 Thanks for sharing! @charles_yarish are you familiar with any research on this subject?
