Would anyone like our extra rope?
-
Hello everyone!
My name is Jared Kannel, and I work in the Conservation Research Department at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut. One of our research projects involves recovering lost and abandoned lobster traps from the bottom of Long Island Sound, to determine the risk they pose to aquatic species and get a survey of all sorts of organisms. We have a protocol for returning or recycling the lobster traps after getting them out of the Sound, but the lobster traps often come with a fair amount of rope that we have not found a way to recycle, so we've unfortunately had to throw out all of the rope that we've collected to date. We would love if there was anyone locally that had use for the rope we pull out of the sound so that our project centered on removing debris from the ocean doesn't create extra debris on land. The rope we recover often comes up in serviceable condition and it would be great to see it put back to use rather than end up in a landfill.
Our trap recovery trips run approximately two times per month, and on each trip we find anywhere from 0 to 30 traps. Generally, there is a significant amount of rope that comes aboard during each collection trip. You could have it for free, we are just hoping that somebody can put it to use so we don't have to throw it all in the trash.
If receiving the rope that we recover is of interest to you, please either respond to this post, or contact me at jkannel@maritimeaquarium.org or the trap recovery project lead Justin, jsusarchick@maritimeaquarium.org
Thank you!
