Supplementing water/water parameters for growing Kelp and warm water Macroalgae
-
After the recent seminar on warm water farming, I am considering setting up a tank to farm Caulerpa lentillifera. I have 18 years of saltwater aquarium experience but trying to grow macroalgae for food consumption is new to me as I feel like it needs to be more sterile than a typical reef tank. I tried previously and believe that my nitrates were too low being the only thing in the tank and was wondering if Kelp hatcheries need to supplement at all or if they pull their water from the ocean which has adequate nutrients. I apologize ahead of time as I haven't yet read the section specific to hatcheries where this topic may be covered. My goal would be to create a prototype farm on a micro-scale to see what farming methods could be replicated in warm water.
@lindsay_ricketts5248 We process nursery water to reduce the risk of contamination from other organisms and species other than the kelp seedlings we are growing using ozone, a protein skimmer, UV sterilizer and mechanical filtration, then add F/2 into the grow tanks to feed the seedlings. You can find more info about our water processing system here: https://hub.greenwave.org/lms/course/seed-production-pathways-to-scale/
@toby_sheppardbloch Thanks! Right after I posted, I started reading the Kelp Hatchery course and it's very informative. I'll finish the course before I ask any more questions but I may have some follow-ups once I complete it.
