Tension buoys

@nick_mercer15 Hi, Nick, the farm design tool suggests a buoy that is a bit smaller than your anchor buoys, such as an A-1 Polyform - which is about 11 inches in diameter.

The purpose is to provide enough buoyancy to help maintain tension on your system at low tide but not to dislodge your anchor at high tide. A trawl float could serve this purpose. Not all farms utilize tension buoys. Farms in deep water and/or with large tidal variations may use chain at the base of the anchor rode instead of or in addition to tension buoys farther up the longline. Placement and sizing will depend on the conditions at your site.

@david_bailey or @clifford_goudey may have additional insights.

Nick, what part of Newfoundland? I used to go up there on a regular basis to the flume tank at the Marine Center and when my head was still stuck in trawl nets. It's beautiful country up there and there does seem to be potential for seaweed farming - kelp in particular.
I'd be happy to opine on your gear design but would need some details on matters related to location, scale, depth, current, tide range, and bottom type. Feel free to rech out to cliff@cagoudey.com if you'd prefer to keep such info close to your chest.

@clifford_goudey That's great to hear, there's a close connection between the Atlantic ports in the U.S. and Canada! We work very closely with the Marine Institute.. We're based in St. John's, but our farm is in St. Mary's Bay. We're in about 20 metres or so (66 feet) and we're putting out 12, 80-metre lines this year. It's a sandy bottom. I'll email you from holdfastnl@gmail.com when I get more info on the current and tide ranges, but current is low and there's not much of a tide. Thanks.

@yoann_busnot3496 Merci Yoann! Quelqu'un qui habite tout pres! Notre ferme est dans St. Mary's Bay.
We also use 80 metre lines (262 feet). Last year was our first year and we didn't get our lines seeded until January. We harvested in June and had about 175 kilograms per line.
Where do you do your nursery?
