Creating a pilot ocean farm in Tasmania, Australia
-
Hello,
are there any Ocean Farms established in Australia?
I represent the community on Bruny Island off the SE coast of Tasmania.
We are looking to start up a pilot ocean farm with a view to having a network of farms in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. The Channel is the perfect location for aquaculture. It's so good we are over run with industrial salmon farms.
We see a network of ocean farms as an ideal way to transition from salmon farming to sustainable aquaculture.
I have questions around start up costs, potential returns, hatchery and seed supply. These are basic questions we need answers to before we can even consider the project.
They will be the first questions asked at any community meeting we have to discuss the project's viability.
One thing we do have in our favour is a wealth of experience on the island with well established oyster farms here plus abundant natural mussells, oysters, scallops and abalone.
We are ideally positioned to begin ocean farming, just need some help with basic questions before we can get going.
Cheers,
Jonathan Ross
@tasmanian over the years I've seen Australians post in the community. You can find them by search for Australia in the top search bar and filtering by community. This one may be helpful as it's related to attaining social license, and this is from someone who is trying to set up a farm in Australia NSW.
@kendall_barbery may have some other resources to connect you to as well. Lots of luck!

Excellent, thank you Julia. I'll follow these links up.

@jonathan_tasmania_australia Hello!
If you haven't already come across the Australian Sustainable Seaweed Alliance, I suggest you check them out. They're a good source for Aussie seaweed info, like this Tasmania-specific guide on regulation/permitting.

Hello and thanks for that information, it's excellent. There's quite a bit to research isn't there!

@jonathan_tasmania_australia Just announcing the launch of our project website at https://www.channelseafarms.com.au
It's purpose is to explain to our island the community the concept and potentail for ocean farming. Please have a look and come back with feedback, good or bad. Can anybody sugest more interesting articles or videos for our resources page?
Interestingly, a pilot farm seems to be falling into our lap with a local oyster farmer wanting expand operations and a local site available that has fishing zones and permits for shellfish, seaweed and finfish in place and current.
We also already have quite a bit of aquaculture expertise on the island so you just never know.....
There seems to be a lot of resources for seaweed cultivation already established in Tasmania too. That's handy.
@jonathan_tasmania_australia seems your link for the website is not working for me??
@craig_lewis Hi Craig, thanks for bringing that to my attention. It was a typo in the url that caused the problem. It's fixed now or just go to https://www.channelseafarms.com.au.
I have been meaning to give you a call and will try sometime this week.
Cheers,
Jonathan
