I have been exploring starting a farm but there are no hatcheries in my area. Does anyone have any experience or how to on getting that started? I don’t think I have the capital to start it but I’m wondering if anyone has experience convincing a school to do so
@sean_haskett -there’s a “how-to” manual that you can find online. I think an organization out of Maine put it together. I made my own little “hatchery” in my garage for about $1500 with the most expensive piece being the water cooler.
@sean_haskett - I think the manual @mike_spranger is mentioning is the Ocean Approved Kelp Farming Manual. This was an amazing resource for me as I began my journey with kelp hatcheries.
Similar to what Mike mentioned, there are a few low cost set-ups that can be done if you have a smaller production goal. Take a look at the Shinnecock Kelp Farmers Set-Up or look at this simple set-up!
@michael_doall Do you have any insight on what may be the best way to approach a school to start one (or partner with)?
