Check your bleach before using!!!
-
Hi all, just a reminder that not all bleach types are equal!! It is become less common to find pure bleach, companies are now adding thickeners and scents to most of there products. "Low-splash" bleach has a thickener that keeps it from splashing, this is not suitable for use in the nursery. The thickener causes the bleach to stick more so than normal bleach. It has the potential to leave unwanted chemicals behind even after the bleach has been neutralized. Low-splash bleach also contains a lower percent of sodium hypochlorite which mean you need to use more to achieve the same sanitation goals. "Outdoor" bleach also contains a thickener and should not be used in the nursery.
It is good practice to research research the type of bleach you are using before use in the nursery.
@david_bailey In the GreenWave nursery we use regular germicidal bleach with none of the added low-splash chemicals, like this from ULINE (https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-19719/Disinfectants/Clorox-Concentrated-Bleach-121-oz-Bottle). If we are using bleach that will come in direct contact with any of the kelp, like during sorus processing, we use lab grade sodium hypochlorite (https://www.amazon.com/CHLOR-12-5-Sodium-Hypochlorite-Purity/dp/B0D43WVM9D?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&smid=A3U0X9G3OQGT0P&th=1). Although it's more expensive, it is higher purity and decreases the chance of any additives impacting the kelp.
