Tumble Cultures in Vivier Tanks
-
Hi all,
This might be slightly off topic but I was wondering if anyone has tried growing seaweed in the sump of a viver tank system? We currently have a vivier system we use for storing lobster until sold, and were wondering whether something like Ulva could be used to reduce nitrates within the system at the same time as increasing biomass of the seasweed itself.
@beth_marshall17 Fascinating. The GreenWave crew doesn't have first-hand experience in tank culture, but there are others in this community who might have some perspective. @torre_polizzi from Sunken Seaweed in California specializes in tank culture of dulse and other red and green seaweeds. Sunken Seaweed has also worked a lot with ulva for nutrient bioextraction. I was just at the Pacific Coast Shellfish Growers Association conference a couple of weeks ago, and several folks presented projects using seaweeds to buffer pH in shellfish hatcheries and nurseries. Would be curious to hear if there are others on the Hub who have some experience with tank-based co-culture.
@kendall_barbery thanks for your reply Kendall, the using seaweed to buffer pH in shellfish hatcheries sounds particularly interesting as well.

hey Beth, I did a project a few years back with Hubbs Seaworld research institute looking at using Ulva in tumble culture to reduce TAN. Ulva in particular worked very well, we saw consistent drawdown of TAN of up to 85%, and the Ulva grew fast, between 300-400% a week, it also put O2 back into the system. The title of that paper is “Gowth, productivity and nutrient removal rates of sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) in a land-based IMTA system with white seabass (Atractoscion nobilis) in Southern California” Dm me if you want a pdf. That being said there is labor that goes into making it a functional way to control nitrates. You can certainly grow ulva in just about any container the factors to growth are consistent temp, sunlight or other light availability, nutrients, as well as an air lift to keep the seaweed light availability. Hope this helps and reach out if you have any questions.

@torre_polizzi Thanks for your reply, it was very useful! If you could send me a pdf of your paper that would be great, it sounds like it would cover a lot of what I need to get started. You can email it to me if that's easier: beth@carymor.wales
Thanks!
