Seaweed farming
-
Hi Guys, I am from Chennai(south India), India. There is a huge scope of seaweed farming here. Does anyone here have any knowledge or experience from this region? I am interested in starting farming and processing of seaweed. We are growing Kappaphycus alvarezii(red algae) and some native brown algae in this region. Thanks
@abbas_bharmal4128 GreenWave doesn't have direct experience with Kappaphycus, but others in this Community might be able to advise. @rod_fujita @charles_yarish @loretta_roberson Might you have thoughts or resources that are relevant to seaweed cultivation in India?
@kendall_barbery @abbas_bharmal4128 Hi Abbas - I have only a little bit of knowledge about seaweed farming in that part of India but no first-hand experience. What I'm learning is that it's been difficult for some seaweed farmers to make a go of it due to high variability in yield. This makes me think that it will be even more important than usual to understand the drivers of these changes in order to site your seaweed farm in the best possible location and to figure out which strains and farming practices will give you the best chance of success. It might also be useful to explore a relationship with The Seaweed Company which I have heard is supporting seaweed farming in Southern India and is planning to build processing plants locally to buy seaweed from the farms they are working with and convert some of the yield into bioplastics under a procurement agreement with the government, as part of their new seaweed innovation and subsidy program. This could have some climate mitigation impact (if people substitute the seaweed bioplastic for petroleum-based plastic) and ocean conservation impact (less microplastic in the ocean). Cheers
