Greetings from California
-
I am very interested in kelp farming to support my indigenous community here in California. I am Chumash (a California tribe here in Central CA). Kelp is one of our traditional foods and will also build trades and sustainability in the community. I also work in climate change locally, and having carbon offsets are just incredibly important.
@teresa_romero -I'm also from california and work for a seafood restaurant and am working to get more seaweed on our menu!
@teresa_romero - Nice to meet you, Teresa, and thanks for tuning in. @karen_gray Leads our programming in California. GreenWave just put our a test farm in the water in Humboldt Bay this past fall! Karen can probably tell you more!
@lindsay_olsen -That is incredibly cool! Would love to know more! @karen_gray feel free to reach out-would love to know the process followed up at Humboldt!

Hello Teresa,
I'd love to stay in contact as I build out my farm. The Chumash people are central to the local history of husbandry here in the Santa Barbara Channel and I'd love to facilitate that cultural connection through my business. I have been meaning to reach out to the Wishtoyo Foundation, any guidance on collaboration is greatly appreciated.

@lauren_kapphahn- Where are you located? I can definitely assist. I work (am enrolled with the Coastal Band of Chumash) alot on Coastal issues both with BOEM/NOAA and State agencies. Please feel free to reach out, it would be helpful to know more about your work.

That's great! We are located in Oxnard, CA and operate as the Rockside Studio, building awareness for coastal issues through art and community events. Our roots(holdfasts?) come from Port Hueneme, CA, where growing up I listened to stories of the way the Chumash rested at the then sandy point of Wynema on their trade and fishing routes to the Channel Islands and up the coast. I imagine what the coast looked like then, how healthy it was, an oasis with a fresh spring and land stewards. Now industrialization has stripped much of the ecological diversity in the coastal zone and impacts human health. My research background includes experimental studies on the impacts of hypoxia and ocean acidification on marine fishes and spatial planning.
We aim to serve the community by working with local businesses and individuals to establish a near shore regenerative farm system that will be modular in design to address point source contaminants, provide educational and economic opportunities. Our goals support healthy water quality practices to limit health risks to individuals surfing, fishing, swimming and diving in our water.
The farm is still in the planning stages but our overall goals are stated on our website under (www.rockside.studio). I'm happy to discuss more details over a call or zoom. I look forward to collaborating.

@teresa_romero - hello! Welcome to the Hub. My work is focused on finding ways through the tough regulatory process to support new ocean farmers in California. However as the process currently stands it is extremely challenging to navigate (I can share a link to a guide I created to help explain the steps) It would be great to support the Chumash tribe to set up a kelp farm in central California. In Humboldt Bay - In Wiyot territory - GreenWave supported Humboldt State University to launch a small seaweed farm site in Aug 2020, operating as the first commercially licensed seaweed farm (started w/ growing Dulse on less than one acre). It was the Humboldt Bay Harbor & Recreation District that had the foresight to establish the area for shellfish growers and created opportunity for seaweed. GreenWave is exploring ways of supporting kelp farming and kelp restoration in California. However it will take more work to create ocean farming opportunities in the state in the future.
@karen_gray -Hi Karen, I would love the link if you could share that forward. I do know that the permit process is likely very complex. (I work on many tribal coastal issues in this region). It's great that there was support locally in Humboldt to move the Wiyot tribe's project forward. I do think those are pathways that assist in making work move forward.
@teresa_romero Here you go! Note in this report I focused on state waters which is within 3 miles of the shoreline (i.e. under California Dept of Fish & Wildlife and Fish and Game Commission) and not in Federal waters (from 3 miles out to 200 miles) or areas with jurisdiction such as Humboldt Bay Harbor District and the Port of San Diego.

@karen_gray -Hi Karen, I'm a marine science researcher and have some policy knowledge as well. Would love to talk to you to hear more about your work in CA. Is there a good email to reach you at? I'm at currier.cori@gmail.com
