NOAA research reveals what goes on sugar kelp
-
Scientists at the NOAA Milford Lab published the first comprehensive list of microorganisms growing on aquacultured sugar kelp throughout a growing season. GreenWave worked with Milford Lab scientists to provide biweekly kelp and seawater samples for the study. After analyzing the samples, it’s what they didn’t find that was important. The team didn’t find any microorganisms on kelp that are food safety concerns and detected minimal presence of species that could affect product quality. That’s great news for industry since some microorganisms could compromise safety and/or quality, and removing encrusting animals and plants increases the cost of preparing kelp for the market.
