Cutting slits in spools for easier outplanting - but they can close up!
-
Note that if you're cutting slits in seed spools, they can shrink!
GreenWave did some R&D in the off season to test easier methods for spool removal from the line after outplanting. We found that cutting a 3/8" slit down the center of our our 4" spools saved us the time and effort of having to disconnect the growline once the spool was unwound.
We did a practice spool over the summer that did not have seed string wrapped around it, and it worked great. However, when we tried to outplant in the winter it was difficult to remove the spool.
We hypothesize that the combination of having the spool wrapped for a long period of time and the colder temperatures could have pinched the gap and made the spool less flexible when pulling it off the lines. More discussion and experimentation is needed!
