How to grow seaweed with out ocean access?

    Hello everyone,

Very excited to have joined this forum! I want to start growing my own seaweed, but I do not live anywhere near the ocean. I am hoping I could grow it in indoor or outdoor tanks. I've been googling it for weeks, and haven't found much helpful information. I saw the Times article on Mike Doall and found this forum from that.

Does any one on here have experience with this or can point me in the right direction?

@andrew_lawniczak - Growing seaweed inland will eliminate the benefit of this method of farming. Instead of being able to harness the energy and nutrients the sun and ocean provide, you'll end up needing to provide everything but the sunlight if you grow on land: water, nutrients, microbes, power/water flow. You also end up with the difficulty of managing a complex system with much less room for error that's simultaneously more prone to collapse.

@clammityjane - I agree there are negatives to having to provide all of those elements. However there are also benefits. By controlling all of those aspects, you can have higher quality control. Certain uses for seaweed require very consistent quality.

I don't think you're going to find very much information on the process you're interested in; seaweed/shellfish co-culture farms are still a pretty new thing in the ocean. There isn't enough interest to try to move them inland at this time, partly because of the expense and partly because of the high environmental cost.
