What type of seed string should I use?

We have tested many different kinds of seed string, including the Japanese Cremona, a somewhat expensive 2mm thick string. Spores settled well on the string, but the thicker string only allowed for half the amount of seed string to fit on a spool at a time. Farmers also noticed that the thick string made it difficult for the seed to be outplanted and stay flush with the lay long lines. The second string we’ve used is Korean seed string. This is very expensive string that is found only at a special shop in Korea which makes it very difficult to obtain. The final string we’ve tested is American holdfast, a 1mm thick nylon tufting twine that is normally used in upholstery.  It’s easily accessible and much less expensive than the alternatives. We have found that it works just as well as the other strings.

We have a partner up in Alaska who is experimenting with growing seed on cotton twine, and has had good preliminary results, but we haven't done this at scale in our hatchery.
