The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) and the Nutrient Bioextraction Initiative will be hosting a virtual webinar on Wednesday, Feb 25th @1PM-2:30PM to share bioextraction research recently completed by the Gobler Lab at SUNY Stony Brook's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) for a project entitled: Long-term Quantification of nitrogen bioextraction and carbon capture by seaweed and bivalve aquaculture in Long Island Sound. This study was funded by the Long Island Sound Partnership. (Webinar link here, and details below.)

    The long-term bioextraction research project:

    • Cultivated seaweeds and oysters year-round at four sites across Long Island Sound for two years
    • Quantified nitrogen and carbon removal rates by harvested seaweeds and oysters
    • Monitored water quality changes at bioextraction (seaweed/oyster) and control (no seaweed/oyster) sites: pH and dissolved oxygen
    • Compared nutrient removal rates to nutrient reduction goals established by Long Island watershed management plans

The webinar will be recorded and recording will be made available. Please feel free to forward this invitation to anyone who may be interested in attending.

**Email the Long Island Sound Bioextraction Coordinator,  Kimarie Yap at kimarie.yap@dec.ny.gov with any questions or a calendar hold invite with draft agenda.
