GIS Skills in Ocean Farming
-
Hi All! I am a Geographic Informations System student learning all about the ins and outs of systems such as ArcPro. I love data management and learning how to attach data to geospatial forms. I was wondering if there is any need or relation between ocean farming and GIS. I am very passionate about both and would love to find a way to combine the two!! Any experience with this or any connections you could provide? Looking for experience ideally anywhere in the US. Thanks!!
@noelle_eubanks I don’t know the specific folks to talk to or connections in this front, depending on the area, but I will say that GIS skills are incredibly valuable to ocean farming, especially when integrated with site selection models. Site selection is probably one of the most important things for most ocean farms and something most people don’t have the background to do, so from consultation and contracting perspective, people who have integrate oceanographic models with GIS and help identify ideal locations for site selection is incredibly useful.
I work more on the kelp restoration side in British Columbia and we work extensively with GIS to map current and historical distributions of kelp, choose sites to replant kelp, and explore drivers of kelp loss.
@noelle_eubanks Hi Noelle! There is a massive need. One is the use of GIS for data collection used for MRV (monitoring, reporting, verification). For those mCDR projects which are pursuing funding via carbon offsets, improving MRV is of great significance and you can learn more about this through publications and other materials on the Ocean Visions website. Another existing and growing use of GIS is monitoring harmful algal blooms which are of large concern for shellfish harvesting. Have you gone and explored the PACE data that NASA provides? Hopefully the GLIMR (Geosynchronous Littoral Imaging and Monitoring Radiometer) mission will further augment the data for such detection. I highly recommend you read Dierssen et al's "Synergies Between NASA's Hyperspectral Aquatic Missions..." as this lays out the prospective trajectory of novel instruments and a number of applications.
