Alternative spool seeding method - Using spores
-
Hi Everyone,
I wanted to share something I tried that produced good sugar kelp spools.
I diluted the spore suspension (approx. 400k spores/ml), placed it in a shallow bin, and rolled the dry spools until they were fully soaked. Then I transferred them to the settling tubes or the growing tank. I agitate the suspension between spools, so the spores are evenly distributed in the water.
I first had this idea when I had a good number of spores but low motility, and I ended up adding this step to my protocol.
All the best,
Rafael
@rafael_sabioni Cool, thanks for sharing here!
@rafael_sabioni Hi, Rafael. I'm curious if you snapped any photos of the spools after sporophytes developed. Could you share if so? Also, did you seed at 400,000 spores/mL or 400 spores/mL? I want to make sure I'm reading your original post correctly. Thanks!
