Is it feasible to apply/do Greenwave Kelp Farm (concept) in Hawaii?
-
Aloha,
Mahalo for bein' here.
I would sincerely like to do the greenwave kelp farm thing here in Puna District, Hawai'i. I'm wondering if any Hawaiians or anybody in this part of the world has attempted to do this? Or any further constructive criticism, suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated.
God bless and be well!

@ashley_95 Hi! I’m not super knowledgeable about Hawaiis aquaculture scene but want to share that “kelp” referring to the large brown seaweeds primarily discussed here almost exclusively grow in cold, nutrient rich water and can’t survive in the tropics. However, many other smaller seaweeds grow in Hawaii and I know some folks are growing there, just typically red or green seaweeds used for food, animal feed, supplements, and the hydrocolloids like carageenan and agar!
There are several companies that grow seaweeds in Hawaii, with both land and sea-based cultivation operations, but I’d recommend looking into what species people grow in your area because their life cycles and grow techniques are quite drastically different from growing kelp in many cases! Here might be a good starting place https://seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu/raising-the-next-generation-of-aquatic-farmers/ . Hope this helps a bit!
