Looking for seaweed farm internship/Volunteering Opportunity (July 2025 onwards)
Hey everyone,
I'm currently looking for a volunteer or internship opportunity on a seaweed farm anywhere in the world, ideally for two to six weeks from July 2025 onwards.
I'm a 30-year-old German, currently living on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, which I’ve called home for nearly six years. I'm in the process of shifting careers and trying to get my foot into the seaweed industry. I've been reading every seaweed-related book I can find, but now I'm keen to get some hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of seaweed and the farming process.
I’ve always had a deep love for the ocean, and I’m passionate about working towards a more sustainable future. My background is in business economics, but for the past five years I’ve worked mainly in agriculture - cropping and feedlotting lambs. I'm used to hard physical work and long days outdoors.
At this stage, I’m not looking to start my own farm but am hoping to land a job with a larger seaweed company in Australia or New Zealand (my partner is a Kiwi) within the next year.
I’m easy-going, love to cook, go camping, and spend time by the ocean. I’d be super grateful for any leads on volunteering opportunities, book recommendations, or advise on how to get my foot into the door of the seaweed world.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Hannah

@craig_lewis thank you! I will look into it
@hannah_94 Not sure if you're geographically limited, but there was just a post about an oyster farm training opportunity here. While this isn't seaweed, there are a lot of transferrable skills that could help you get off the ground. Not to mention it could be a good networking opportunity. Lots of luck!
@jwhis Thank you
@lucas_evans @rebecca_barclay @ryan_marchington1903 do you know of any relevant opportunities for an eager kelp farm hand in NZ? See @hannah_94's message above for details.
@jwhis Thank you
