New Kelp farmer curious about how often I should be checking a single line 200 ft array!
-
Hi all! My name is Eliza, and I'm a new kelp farmer happy to join this community. I'm in the process of submitting my LPA for my first farm here in Belfast, Maine, and will be starting small with just one 200 foot single line array in about 25-35ft of water (10 ft tidal range, mud bottom).
My primary career is in entertainment, and I live in Brooklyn most of the year where I work as a theater artist. I grew up in Belfast, and am incredibly passionate about supporting the bay, but I'm wondering how realistic it is for me to maintain even a small line when I'm not here full-time.
If I plan to come back home every 2-3 months to check progress, does that feel reasonable? Of course, I'd be here more during outplanting and harvesting, but once the array is in and the kelp is growing, how often should I be checking on it? Is it realistic to be able to grow from afar in this way for such a small scale farm? And do you have any advice for someone looking to start out in this way?
Also-- any tips on places in Maine willing to buy a small harvest (less than 800 lbs) would be greatly appreciated!
Really appreciate your insight!
