Starting a regenerative ocean farm in the UK!
-
Hi everyone!
I'm Josh from the UK! I've been a coral reef scientist / science communicator for about 7 years now and during this time have talked about, written about and researched regenerative ocean farming. Recently my brother-in-law (once upon a time a marine biologist himself) suggested we explore kelp/mussel/oyster farming in his home county Cornwall. A fantastic idea that we're both pretty excited about!
I'm somewhat new to EVERYTHING regen ocean farming from the practical side, so would love:- Some advice on first steps
- To talk to anyone who has experience setting up a farm in the UK (permits, access etc.)
- What to do's / what not to do's
- Who to speak to on the ground (organisations, universities etc. - I'm a member of the University of Exeter so am currently chatting to a few colleagues there)
- Anything else that might well be relevant!
I'll check here regularly, but please do email me on joshpys@icloud.com
Thanks in advance!
Josh
@josh_pysanczyn1802 Seaweed For Europe has some information around licensing in the UK - and features two seaweed farmers around Cornwall that maybe you could reach out to. Câr y Môr is another farm in Wales that pops up in the news. For more academics & training there's SAMS Seaweed Academy in Oban. I'm sure others in the community could weigh in too!
@jwhis Amazing, thanks for this - super helpful. Have reached out to both Cornish and Welsh farms some time ago but to no avail! Will continue the probe, but the Seaweed For Europe page is a brilliant resource

Hi Josh, this sounds very exciting! I work for Car Y Mor in South West Wales, we currently have 1 seaweed farm and 2 shellfish farms (oysters, mussels and scallops). Let me see if one of the team who had experience with the licensing etc is available to chat with you. Algapelago and BiomeAlgae are also 2 other seaweed farms based near to you, and there is also Cornish Seaweed who already have a farm I believe. I travelled to SAMS in Oban last year to attend the Seaweed Academy training course and found it extremely helpful and a good way to make contacts so I would definitely suggest keeping an eye out for the next one!
