Hi all, our Fairfield Garden Club may have interest in setting up a kelp farm. Who can help me with seeds, what hatchery would help in Fairfield CT area, and where to set one up in the Long Island Sound. Thanks for your help. Virginia Dean Fairfield CT

@virginia_dean1209 Currently, GreenWave is the main provider of kelp seed throughout the southern New England region. We also provide step-by-step instructions on setting up and operating a kelp seed hatchery in the Courses section of this Hub (find more information here: https://hub.greenwave.org/lms/#hatchery/getting-started). If you are new to kelp farming and seed production, in addition to taking a look at the Courses on the Hub and viewing recordings of past webinars on general and technical topics, I would recommend exploring some local resources, including the CT Aquaculture Mapping Atlas, the Connecticut Department of Agriculture/Bureau of Aquaculture guidance on permitting seaweed farms in CT waters, and additional resources from CT Sea Grant. Of note: the Bridgeport Regional Aquaculture Science and Technology Education Center has a lease in waters near/off of Fairfield, CT where they have cultivated kelp in the past. Soundwaters is a non-profit in Stamford, CT that created an educational kelp farm in LIS. @Michael_Bagley from Soundwaters may be able to share insights on their experience.

@kendall_barbery I work on a oyster farm Ireland. Its an exposed sand bank that can be worked on at low tide. Any Idea where I could get seed in Ireland. I have a wildlife biology degree and think I can get my community to diversify. There may be a niche for me to work on helping the oyster farmers transition.
