Summer 2024 Research/Shadowing Interest

My name is Connor Nicholas, and I am a first-year student at Boston College. I am studying Global Public Health and Biology, and I hope to go to medical school and to work at the intersection of medicine and policy. I am a part of the Gabelli Presidential Scholars Program here, which helps to develop leadership skills by encouraging and challenging students with international experiences, service, and internships.
I wanted to reach on this platform out about a potential research and shadowing opportunity with the organization. I learned about Greenwave's mission and regenerative ocean farming last semester in one of my biology classes, and it really interested me because of the restorative aspect of the farming. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to come to one of your regenerative ocean farms for 7-14 days in July or August this upcoming summer to both experience what it is like working on one of these farms and to learn about the future and role of green technology and climate-friendly organizations from some of Greenwave’s staff. I think it would be a fulfilling experience as I would get hands-on experience working on one of the farms, and I would be able to learn from Greenwave’s current leaders and pioneers in the field of restorative green technology.
I am in the process of applying for an Advanced Study Grant through Boston College which would ensure that this research and shadowing experience would not be at any cost to Greenwave. Please reach out if anyone is open to supporting this. My email is nicholfe@bc.edu.

@connor_nicholas6607 Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, GreenWave does not have an internship program at this time. Our work focuses on training and supporting current and emerging farmers, seed producers, and others throughout the kelp value-chain and we host educational programming and intensive virtual and hands-on training opportunities. Scroll over to our Events calendar (to the left) to see how you can get involved.
Since you are located in the Boston area, and you are looking for something in the off season for kelp, you might consider opportunities for connecting with oyster/shellfish farmers in Cape Cod Bay, Buzzards Bay, or Vineyard Sound (in MA), or head north to Gulf of Maine. Organizations such as Sea Meadow Marine Foundation in Yarmouth, ME might be better suited to bring on an intern. All that said, while small organizations and farms may benefit from some additional hands, it actually takes quite a bit of time and resources to properly support an intern. If this is something you are really interested in getting a feel for, pursuing a summer/temp job may be a better approach than an internship. Companies such as Island Creek Oysters in Duxbury often hire additional farm hands during the summer.
But all operations are different. Let's see if we can get some other folks to weigh in on whether/how they work with interns and how to best navigate those opportunities.
