Hello all, Anyone know Stonington CT has good waters for kelp farming? I have been trying to get in touch with the harbormaster there response. Any help greatly appreciated.
@toby_sheppardbloch Thank you for responding. Is that area too populated or is there room? We are looking for 20 acres after kelp we are going to add oysters, mussels and scallops.
@john_cotton Thank you for your reply. Any information is a big help for us. We are in the designing phase and we are planning to add mussels and scallops that is why we chose 20 acres.
@melissa_giovagniolli6180 once you have a project description, I recommend contacting Matt Bartell at the CT Bureau of Aquaculture for an initial consultation. You'll also want to connect with the Stonington Shellfish Commission, rather than the harbormaster, assuming you are looking for sites in town waters. Here is a guidance document published by the Commission: http://www.stoningtonshellfishcommission.org/aquaculture/guidance.pdf. You should also explore the CT ECO Aquaculture Mapping Atlas to familiarize yourself with other activity in that area: https://cteco.uconn.edu/viewer/index.html?viewer=aquaculture. Refer to the site selection courses on this Hub for general and CT-specific guidance.
@kendall_barbery Thank you for the helpful information. I am looking in state waters. Who would I contact for that? This is our area we are looking into.

@melissa_giovagniolli6180 We have had good results on our farm by Bluff Point and other farms have also performed well in the immediate area

You might want to start smaller than 20 acres! I have a 300,000 oyster farm and a 25,000 feet kelp farm all about 8 acres!
