Pacific Sea Farms (in Washington state off the shores of Vashon Island between Seattle and Tacoma) has been working through the permitting process for our regenerative seaweed/shellfish farm for 2 years. Back in January we secured our final permit only to have it appealed by a local group. The case was heard in May. It lasted for 7 days, included 14 witnesses, 100+ exhibits and the ruling came down this week. The appellant failed to prove ANY of their 17 allegations and the ruling was resoundingly and unanimously in our favor. We had a great team of scientists, biologists and other experts helping us for which we are very grateful.
Special thanks to Greenwave (Lindsay, Virginia, Scott and Sam) for their support and guidance as well as all of the tools and info found on this site!!
With that behind us we can focus on putting gear in the water and planting sugar kelp in November and shellfish shortly thereafter.
Every potential farm location will be different and face different challenges. I chose my site very carefully with a variety of factors taken into consideration but despite that the opposition found a number of things to challenge. Again, they were all found to be without merit but potential farmers should be aware of them
If you’re interested in reading the 77 page ruling which covers all the issues we’ve posted it to our website at www.pacificseafarms.com
Also, here is a link to an article in the local paper that highlights the effort
