Land-based Kelp Farming in California
-
Hi All,
I work in environmental consulting and I've been very interested in seaweed farming for the past few years. I'm curious if anyone on here is doing land-based seaweed farming in California to avoid the extensive permitting process? The only land based seaweed farm I've heard about so far is Monterey Bay Seaweeds. I'd love to start my own farm or team up with others to start a farm in the future. Any resources or guides on this topic would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Alex
@alexander_smither Monterey Bay seaweeds has a land-based farm. As far as I know they farm giant kelp among other species like sea lettuce, sea grapes, ogo, and velvet horn. Their circumstances are unique since the owner is a professor at SJSU and has access to land at a NOAA facility that took care of permitting for pumping in seawater earlier on.
Happy to share more about them or connect you with Mike if interested.
@arnav_mariwala I'd love to hear more about them! I'll send you an email so we can chat further.
@arnav_mariwala I live in Capitola and would love to visit your facility! Is that possible?
@arnav_mariwala and @marcia_Hi! I am also in the same boat and looking to dive into the world of California Kelp! My two housemates and I are just getting our toes wet in the learning process here at the hub! Would love to hear about y'alls experiences trying to break into this world!
@marcia_kelley The facility isn't mine, but I'm flattered because what Mike is building in Monterey is awesome! You should def contact him - his info is on the Monterey Bay Seaweeds website.
@carly_kay19 Happy to share my learnings! I just moved from San Francisco to Mumbai, India to start up a land-based company here, but happy to chat over zoom or email and reconnect in person when I'm visiting the Bay this September. Been foraging seaweed for about a year and a half now and I have a pretty good working knowledge of permitting and other requirements. You can email me at arnav.mariwala@gmail.com.
@alexander_smither Where in California are you located?
@danielle_buard Currently, I'm in Chico, but I plan to relocate closer to the coast.

@alexander_smither Hey Alex! I have heard anecdotally that the city of Fort Bragg is looking into permitting an operation like this. I'm not sure who to direct you towards, but hopefully this is helpful!
