Warm Water Farmers
-
So far most of the information on Greenwave is based around cold water products, which is great as we need to start somewhere. But I thought that those of us who prefer not to freeze our asses off, might like to pull our resources and have a warm water subsection.
There is a red algae (Asparagopsis taxiformis) that grows in water that stays around 80F (Caribbean) that when mixed with cattle feed by a 2% margin, it effectively reduces methane emissions by an average of 60%. Methane is 22 times more harmful to the environment than carbon monoxide (automotive emissions). This is what we identify as a market. Other markets include ocean farmed fish and seafood like shrimp.
We can also get creative and grow fruits and vegetables in short walled barges using hydro and aquaponics. How about a chicken ranch at sea, it’s possible. You have all the free water and energy that you could ever need. Whats more, according to Cornerstone Custom Built Homes, “ The average 1200 square feet house with all the necessities would cost somewhere around $195,600 and the luxurious one would make you debit your bank account with more or less $3,000,000.
Note: This estimate does not include land and registry cost.” Where a 1200 sq ft ocean safe barge home with an equal sizes yard on top would cost around $400K, very much in line with a land built home, except if you don’t like your neighbors, you can move and take your home with you.
Location is important, the mud flats from Florida to Texas is all prime territory but I prefer to be beyond the 24 nautical mile limits where the governments have no authority over us. Government still claim all mineral rights out to 200NM so there can’t be any mining or drilling but we can live with those limitations. For anyone interested in actually living at sea, with all its freedoms and challenges, you may be interested in reading about our Village at Sea Project at marinea.org
Anyone interested in Warm Water Farming and Ranching is invited to post a note here so we can identify ourselves to each other and begin sharing info about our warm water interests.
My name is Bob (aka NeptunePriest) and can be contacted at bob@marinea.org Live in South Carolina USA at this time and have been developing the ocean village concept with dozens of others for over 8 years and counting. By the way, the sea is the safest place on Earth to live, especially in a nuclear war.

@bob_llewellyn man enjoyed reading your post. I will email you. Koffi
@bob_llewellyn I'm a total newby to ocean farming and really only just starting to explore. So in all honesty, I won't have much to contribute...
However, I AM interested in the warm water sub-section. Originally from the Netherlands, I currently live in Cyprus, a small island in the eastern mediterranean with 400 miles of coastline and - from what I've been able to gather - no kelp farming activity whatsoever.
So I'm exploring if I could start a farm here while I would rely heavily on expertise from other places. Cyprus is HOT, so among other things I'm looking to hear from experienced warm water kelp (and shallfish?) farmers what varieties are best suited for this type of climate and any other tips for warm water kelp farming.
Any insights, from anyone, very welcome!!
Thanks, Lukas
