Hey everyone! I studied fisheries and aquaculture many years ago. I got out real fast!!! I’d love to make this work as a viable business and save my part of the pacific. Loved Bren’s book!
@mike_wilson Hey there - I'm in Surrey, near the Semiahmoo / Boundary Bay. I'm really curious to learn more about how to determine how viable a place is for kelp farming. I'm cautiously hopeful about my local area, but where else are people thinking? Is anyone moving forward in a serious manner yet? (I am very much still in the investigative phase)
@ivar_vasara Hello my friend!!! I’m in Coquitlam. I work for the Surrey Fire Dept. And grew up in white rock…. Lol. I’m looking at starting a farm on the Sunshine Coast and moving there. But I’m in the same boat as you, still just investigating. I’m loving this 3D restorative ocean farming concept!! Let’s talk more!!
@mike_wilson hi Mike, There is extensive bivalve grow out and hatchery experience across the border here on San Juan Island Washington. If you were interested I could round up interests and resumès. David
@david_geist Hi David. I was just there on San Juan Island a couple months ago. Lol. I didn’t even think to look at this industry while I was there. What exactly do you have there for operations? Cheers.
Hi everyone, I am in Vancouver and would be really interested in starting a Kelp/shellfish farm. I have a background in Microbiology (I also studied ocean microbiology and phycology) and am thinking my education and lab experience might make me more suited to growing seed. I am interested in contributing to this industry if I can. I'm just started collecting information and learning. I would love to connect with people in the area to share what we're learning and build partnerships/network
@emily_mcgloin Hi Emily. Great to hear from you! Awesome!! Your background sounds perfect for this. I’ve been chatting with Ivar in Surrey who is also interested in an ocean farm. We all seem to be at the investigating stage still. I was thinking of starting a coffee meetup so we can all chat and get to know eachother. What do you think? Mike
@emily_mcgloin@mike_wilson Hey you two. I'm sorry I disappeared from there forums, but after the second session (site evaluation) I did some research and it became apparent that there's no viable location for kelp farming in my vicinity. (The local martime systems are too turbid and the kelp wouldn't get enough light to thrive.) I was investigating kelp farming with an eye to the local area and I'm not in a position to go farther afield, so I have to bow out for now. I do send my best wishes though - I think kelp farming would be a rewarding, positive endeavour and hope you find success! Cheers, Ivar

As an aside, this is the BC government page to start a kelp farming journey

@ivar_vasara
Thanks ivar. I was looking at that before. We’d be applying for the co-culture option, right?
