Hi all,
Does anyone have any ideas for control of unwanted Ectocarpus species in seaweed stock cultures. I'm trying to eliminate Ectocarpus from a stock culture of Ulva. Preferably by manipulating salinity or some treatment that Ulva will handle but Ectocarpus won't.
Cheers,
Chris
@chris_blake Ectocarpus doesn't tolerate desiccation well, so in our sugar kelp hatchery we try to control it by exposing our spools to air for about 15 mins (once the kelp seed is hardy enough to withstand). We also will lower the light levels of our tanks to slow the growth of ectocarpus.
In case helpful -- here is GreenWave's entire lesson on Identifying and Managing Contamination, we list strategies for a number of common contaminants.
