Global Map of Propagation Centers and Hatcheries
-
Hi, all. I combined the hatchery/propagation center data from GreenWave and the Phyconomy.net database and mapped it to get a sense of the geographic distribution of these orgs. Feel free to use it -- I filled data as best I could regarding org. type and gov. affiliation and it may not be correct.
Here is the combined list.hub.greenwave.org/assets/4ba0d31a-7ba6-4656-aeec-f0b18335390c.xlsx:
Here is a link to the global map with this data plotted.

My suspicion is that there are some facilities in British Columbia, the Canadian Atlantic provinces, Japan and Oceanic/the SE Asian archipelagos (the Philippines, Indonesia) that are not yet included. Please feel free to let me know if you know of any others or if you spot any errors.
Cheers
@stephen_lowery - Wow! This is a wonderful tool, thank you for sharing!
Amazing resource! Thanks for sharing @stephen_lowery
@stephen_lowery - Thank you for putting this together! I love the map feature! GreenWave is working on reaching out to active kelp hatcheries in the US to get contact information to better assist farmers who are looking to source seed. I'll be sure to share what we come up with by the end of the summer. I'm sure your list will really come in handy in identifying any operations that fell through the cracks!
@stephen_lowery -This is great. I have been meaning to research this in-depth, adding what species these nurseries could provide.
There are a lot of companies who operate their own hatchery for themselves. Same for the academic side, while others supply seed to farmers, only with the idea that they can then buy back whatever the farmers grow to process, like Atlantic Sea Farms.
So a mix of models. Hortimare is the only company I can think of for now that really has a biz model of focusing solely on seed supply.
@stephen_lowery Τhanks a lot for sharing this information. I'm based in Greece, and we are interested in setting up a kelp farm in the Mediterranean. As yet there is very little to go on, but it seems there are moves in the European Union to set things in motion. An article regarding this appeared in a major Greek newspaper a couple of weeks ago, and promotional programs are due to start in 2023. As soon as I have more definite information, I will post it here.
@stephen_lowery Very good initiative!
