Alaska Native Kelp Farmer Training Opportunity!
-
A new training opportunity is coming up this summer, for Alaska Native folks interested in kelp farming, hosted by our friends at Native Conservancy, Ecotrust, and Spruce Root. Here's their announcement:
Greetings Mariculture Enthusiasts!
Are you interested in becoming a kelp farmer? Join us in Cordova, AK, for the 2022 Native Kelp Farmer Training and Harvest Workshop, June 15-18th. All travel, lodging and meals will be covered by Spruce Root thanks to generous support from the Native American Agricultural Fund.
A total of 4 Alaska Native participants will be selected to participate in this in-person training hosted by the Native Conservancy in Cordova, AK. Folks will travel to Cordova to receive a hands-on farm tour and harvest workshop, as well as classroom time to discuss everything about kelp farming from seasonal logistics, permitting, farm financials, business planning, and time to sit down with real kelp farmers.
Upon completion of this training, the 4 participants will be invited to apply to become one of two (2) Mariculture Fellows with Spruce Root in a 10-month long program. Each Mariculture Fellow will receive a monthly stipend, access to a small farm supplies budget, and direct technical assistance to actively pursue their own farm site/mariculture business.
Please apply today! The deadline to apply is May 30th. Questions can be direct to Miakah Nix: mnix@ecotrust.org.
