Hey guys , I'm a newbie here. I discovered ocean farm during the first pandemic wave reading books and I got interested. I'm not in US but in EU, specifically in Italy. I'd love to know if any of you from Italy is here, as I'd love to start growing kelp. I know its very difficult also because Im not a farmer and either a fisherman nor a biologist so I'll need help at 100%.

    Thanks

    Nicco

@niccolo_bolge - Hi Nicco, are you looking in cultivating in Italy or are you flexible in where you want to potentially start your farm?. Bear in mind that kelp needs cold(er) water and is generally happy with a maximum of 15 degrees water temperature (mostly seeded around October/November and harvested April/May - depending on location). Best regards, Petra

@niccolo_bolge - You might find some of the resources we list for European farmers (at the bottom of this page) useful! Seaweed for Europe has some really good resources including a permitting toolkit for European growers.

@petra_steenhoek -Hey Petra thanks your reply! Yes I was wondering Italy in particular.. Yes I was thinking the same about water temperature reading the courses, but in winter time in the north of Italy or in Sardinia, the temperature should be fine.. Have u settled a farm in Europe? Cheers!

@niccolo_bolge - Hi Nicco, Hortimare supplies seaweed seedlings to farmers globally with a large focus on the European market. We used to have our own test site in Norway and we've been helping out farmers in Europe over the past decade as well as supplying them with starting material.

Seaweed farming is about making choices; which species for which market and where to grow them. Temperature is a key element for which species you would be growing but also nutrients and which species can grow in your area and which are allowed to be grown. Seaweed for Europe can indeed provide you with a lot of information and we would also be able to point you out in the right direction.

In case you wish to receive information, then please send me an e-mail on petra.steenhoek@hortimare.com or call me on +31 6 27 19 54 28 and it will be our pleasure to share relevant knowledge with you.

    Best regards, Petra
